This collage represents those moments in life, all too rare, when barriers are overcome. The particular barriers envisioned were barriers to communication -- preconceptions, misunderstanding, nursed grievances, distance, walls of silence -- but they could also be social barriers, barriers to economic participation, language barriers, or physical barriers. In this work, the barriers still exist: they are not magically dissolved, they are not reduced to rubble, they are still being augmented in other areas even as small breakthroughs occur. But they are not impervious, and there is hope.
Breakthrough was designed from the center outward. It was created to celebrate receiving a telephone call from an estranged family member.
Created from de-acidified and buffered magazine clippings on deep cradled MDF. The collage is protected with a topcoat of clear acrylic medium (as a conservation layer) and a UVLS polymer varnish.
The other works in this series are Mandala, Outburst, Ruby, and Labyrinth.
