The "compass" in this title refers to a compass rose, the figure on a map used to indicate the cardinal directions (N, S, E, W) and their intermediate points (NE, NW, SE, SW). Imagine such compass as part of an inlaid map belonging to an emperor or a maharaja, and you have Jade Compass. Like the natural materials of jade, malachite, and celadon, each of the hand-cut pieces used here show individual variations that add to the beauty of the collage.
This is the green piece in a set of eight mandala-like collages (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, brown, and black) made for the traveling Rainbow Show exhibition by Philadelphia Collageworks.
Made of recycled paper (de-acidified and buffered magazine clippings) on archival mat board (Crescent Ragmat). This piece comes unframed, with an acid-free mat and backing sized to fit a standard 8x10 frame.
