Eight-fold mandalas are both the simplest to make (divide a circle in two, then each half in two, and finally each quarter in two) and the most deeply symbolic. Other mandalas are based on the six-fold symmetry of snowflakes. The main figure in this collage, however, has eleven facets. The slight variations that derived from hand-cutting shapes from irregularly shaded clippings add fascination to otherwise simple radial forms.
This is the orange piece in a set of eight mandala-like collages (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, brown, and black) made for the traveling Rainbow Show exhibition by Philadelphia Collageworks.
Made of recycled paper (de-acidified and buffered magazine clippings) on archival mat board (Crescent Ragmat). This piece comes unframed, with an acid-free mat and backing sized to fit a standard 8x10 frame.
