This small piece alludes to mazes on three different levels. First the collage places the viewer inside a three-dimensional passage looking toward an exit but stymied by the barrier imposed by the copper grate, suggesting not just a simple tunnel but a type of maze that requires a more creative solution. The pattern of the grate itself portrays a small fragment of a larger two-dimensional maze or labyrinth. The form of that maze also resembles the pathways of a printed electronic circuit, which is the physical representation of a maze of programmed logic.
Created by Deborah Eater from de-acidified and buffered magazine clippings on deep cradled MDF. The collage is protected with a topcoat of clear acrylic medium (as a conservation layer) and a UVLS polymer varnish.
The companion pieces in this series are Mandala, Outburst, Breakthrough, and Ruby.
