This is the next major piece I produced after Ikebana, and again I was concerned with developing the work from a single elegantly curved line. In "Dawn," as in Ikebana, I continued experimenting with longer, thinner strips of paper -- approximately 3mm x 30mm -- in contrast to my usual 10mm squares, although the application is different.
The shapes and colors suggest to me daybreak in an alien setting. In a sense, every dawn of a new day is the creation of a new world. Sunrise brings promise, hope, exhilaration ... but also a sense of strangeness and the unknown. As usual, I had great difficulty in coming up with a title for this piece. In the end I settled on part of a line from the Book of Psalms, "At nightfall, weeping enters in, but with dawn comes rejoicing."
