Paper as Paint, Curves as Inspiration

Deborah Eater is a nationally acclaimed artist creating subtle mosaic-like collages from magazine clippings and other papers.

"I'm fascinated by curving lines, whether I encounter them in nature,in fabricated structures such as bridges and highways; or as mathematical concepts.

"I approach collage as if it were painting, using scraps of paper as the brush strokes I "paint" with.  A small 9" x 12" piece may involve a thousand or more individually-pasted pieces of paper some just a few millimeters wide. It's a slow process, but it's a labor of love.

"My studio practice is marked by a commitment to sustainability. In addition to using recycled paper from catalogs and magazines, I look for ways to reduce the environmental impact of every part of my process.

"I believe that being creative -- in any fashion, not just making art -- is an intrinsic part of being fully human."
